Wildfire Smoke Ring Sketches

I have sketched what I want to try and design. It has a lot of movement that I am not sure I can easily translate into knitting.

The bottom sketch is a second one I made that is a little more blocky and might be more knittable. I will see what I can come up with as far as lace patterns that will bring my idea to life.

I wanted to capture the line of intense orange fire that contrasts with the dark smoke. I hope it doesn’t look too halloweenish. I will make a swatch to see how the colors work.

Wildfires

Utah has been plagued with wildfires this summer. It seems like the whole Wasatch Front is burning. The photos are frightening and seeing the fire spread in person is terrifying. But in all that destruction, there is an elegance to the fire. The orange line of fire with the dark gray smoke above has its own fierce beauty.

I want to capture that beauty somehow. I have been looking at the smoke over the last few weeks and thinking how it almost looks like lace. Swirling clouds of black that occasionally let sky peek through. I want to design a lace scarf or cowl that mimics the smoke. Maybe a smoke ring!
